The Mysteries of Angkor Wat by Richard Sobol

I loved this quick visit to an ancient temple. The author gives the reader some great facts about the history of Cambodia, as well as giving us a glimpse of it's future in his young tour guides, the children he meets on the grounds of the famous temple.

Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As usual, I am fascinated that books in poetry form, when done well, seem to be able to convey twice the emotional punch with less than half the text. The story of a young girl's experiences during the fall of Saigon, and her family's immigration to America has a lot of punch, even though she seems to be on the fringe of events. You may need to insert your own historical knowledge into the story, as the protagonist is sometimes unaware of what is happening. Still, the books brings a great perspective to a piece of history whose ultimate outcomes are often missed.

The library garden is producing more and more vegetables every day. So far, we have delivered 18 pounds of produce to the Church Mouse Food Pantry. Our members have also taken quite a bit of produce home to taste as well.

First Harvest

While the gardening has not been great this year, (too much rain and weird weather), we have harvested our first veggies from the garden.

It's time again for Summer Reading Fun and Games.

Programs are available for children of all ages, and reading levels. You can pick up a reading passport and check in anytime to win a weekly prize, or attend our scheduled Wednesday programs.

Babies and toddlers can begin reading readiness activities with our Read-To-Me prize program, and they can also enjoy fun activities with other children in Baby Bugs or Sunshine Babies.

We are welcoming back some of our best loved visitors including Holly Carine from Geauge-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, and the KSU Trumbull Children's Theater. In addition, we are pleased to present both the author, Jeanne Bryner, and illustrator, Wanda Kover, of a new children's book. We are holding a wedding reception for The Wedding of Miss Meredith Mouse on June 18. Check out the calendar and program descriptions below to plan your summer fun.

Planting Day

The first round of vegetables have been planted in the library garden. Today the kids and I planted tomatoes, zucchini, peas and radishes.

More seeds will go in when the garden dries out from the recent rains. Each child took home a pepper or tomato plant. The remaining plants will be given away during our Garden Celebration on June 4 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Stop by and see how the garden is growing, taste some yummy treats, take home a free plant, and get some good garden info. There will be activities for children and adults.

Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman

Odd is not named for being different from others in his village, but for the tip of a blade. Odd is, however, very odd. He has a smile that baffles everyone, and a bad leg that doesn't seem to bother him much. When his step-family and fellow villagers become restless at the end of a very long winter, Odd sets out on an adventure that will take him all the way to Asgard and to the rescue of the Gods who live there. An excellent fairy tale with an excellent hero who we hope will be back in future books.

Griff Carver, Hallway Patrol by Jim Krieg

If you took Law and Order, most buddy cop movies you've seen and dragnet and crammed it all into middle school, you'd have Griff Carver. All the usual suspects are there, the hard boiled cop (safety patrol officer), the scrappy journalist, the eager young partner, and even the crooked politician (who's running for class president). Add in a ring of fake hall pass pushers, a principal who is only interested in quiet well-behaved cops, and even a nervous snitch and you've got a great story told through incident reports, recorded interviews with the guidance councilor and entries from a diary...no wait, journal. Never call it a diary.

A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park

This is the story of two African journeys, one a scary flight from war and death, the other a daily walk to fetch water for the family. The way Park pulls the two stories together makes the book both readable and interesting. A great way for American students to understand some of the controversy surrounding the country of Sudan.

This book is great for all budding evil masterminds. Vordak imparts important information like how to choose the perfect lair, and how to handle minions and henchmen. If you can avoid his devious punishments for inattention and impertinence, you too can attempt world domination.

Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bink and Gollie is a winner. Both characters are individuals in their own way, and while they don't always get along, they find ways to work it all out in the end. Great for pre-readers and early readers alike, you can read the whole thing in one go, or savor one chapter at a time. I hope there will be more of Bink and Gollie.

Pet Show

Last night the second annual Pet Show was held on the library lawn. Several dogs and two fish were in attendance along with their owners, and we were happy to welcome Kim Elliot from the Newton Falls Animal Hospital as our guest judge. Everyone had a great time, including the pets.

Harvesting

The Library Gardeners are beginning to harvest vegetables from our garden.

Last Saturday the kids tasted fresh green beans, and so far we have donated zucchini, summer squash and spinach and other greens to the Newton Falls Food Pantry. We hope there will be more to come.

Water Babies and Bubbles

This past Friday, the Newton Falls Public Library welcomed very young children for an outdoor program called Water Babies.

We read stories, played in the water and chased bubbles on the lawn.

Everyone had a great time getting wet, and playing together, despite a few raindrops as the program ended.

Garden Club

The library Sprouts garden is growing by leaps and bounds.

We are currently harvesting squash, zucchini and green beans. All our young gardeners get to taste their harvest before the remainder is donated to the Newton Falls Food Pantry.

Knit 'n' Stitch Success

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts is a great setting for a new series with lots of monsters and fairy tale creatures. During the month of May over 200 students ages 3-7 planted 16 planters with vegetable and herb seeds.

This is Mrs. Stimpert's class at Saints Mary and Joseph School

The children planted tomatoes, beans, peas, cilantro and zucchini. They learned about things that are good for a garden, like bees, garter snakes and toads.

This is Mrs. Rose's class at the Prep Center

These plants will be moved to the vegetable garden at the library and tended all summer by the Library Sprouts. Check in here to see how our garden grows.

The gardening season is starting here and, thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), awarded by the State Library of Ohio, preschoolers, kindergartners and first graders in Newton Falls get to plant with us. Today I was excited to visit the preschoolers at SS Mary and Joseph School. We learned about gardening and growing food. The students planted zucchini, spinach, tomatoes and cilantro. They will be tending these plants for the next several weeks, before the plants and the students will be invited to work in the library garden. Visit here often to see our progress.

Three friends wait for the first signs of winter with excitement and wonder. Squirrel, Hedgehog and Bear are usually sleeping when the first snow comes, so they decide to stay up this year and see what all the fuss is about. The illustrations are beautiful, soft and have just the right tone for a crisp fall woods and drifting snowflakes. The friends confusion about what exactly the snow will look like adds humor and fun to the story.

Next week many of us will be waiting not so patiently for word from Boston as the American Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children will announce their picks for the Newbery and Caldecott Medal. The Newbery is awarded each year for excellence in writing for children, the Caldecott for excellence in illustration. Many librarians enjoy predicting which books will win, and we are usually way off, but, in the interest of fun, here is my pick for the Newbery.:
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Minli lives with her parents in a tiny house in a tiny village, and her mother wants a better life. Minli listens to her father's tales and sets out on a journey to change the family's fortune. With the help of a goldfish, a dragon, and many other magical meetings, she learns about true happiness. I loved this book. All the different tales went well with the main story, and kept me interested in what was happening. However, Minli spent the whole story learning that she didn't need a fortune to be happy, but in the end, got a fortune anyway. Doesn't that seem wrong? Still, a wonderful book to read and share.

They were coming for me. I could just see the dark shapes stumbling over the hill, their hair and cloaks whipping in the wind. The storm was rising, and would be good cover for my escape. I turned and fled into the night. Stumbling downhill and splashing across the creek, icy fear crept up my spine, and cold rain poured down on my head. I must find shelter. Downhill to the right I spied an abandoned barn. “Better to avoid people altogether,” I thought, and turned toward the ramshackle barn. It looked rather run down, but was dry and smelled only of old straw. I climbed into the loft, curled up in the hay, and slept until dawn. When the sound of birds singing awoke me, I was stiff with damp and cold, but relieved that it was once again light. Climbing down to the barn floor I noticed an old nag munching hay in the corner. She easily let me saddle her, and I climbed on her back and headed for the open road, but which direction? Back toward town, where the police might believe my story, and help, or into the forest where I could hide until a better plan came to mind.

Lucky Breaks by Susan Patron

Lucky is about to turn eleven, and life is good. Her new mother is learning more about mothering every day with Lucky's help, her friend Lincoln is as steady and steadfast as ever, and it looks like Lucky might even have a new friend, and this time, it's a girl. But then stuff starts going wrong. Lucky can't quite figure out why she feels so mad at Lincoln, or so worried about what her new friend's parents will think of the little town of Hard Pan, but with the help of the same band of motley characters who appeared in The Higher Power of Lucky, she'll figure it all out.

Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick

Home P. Figg has got to find his brother before he's lost in the greatest battle of the Civil War. Harold was tricked into enlisting in the Union Army, and it's all Homer's fault, so Homer runs away from his small Maine town, and works his way south, using his excellent talent for lying to wiggle out of all kinds of scrapes and predicaments along the way. Don't miss this excellent new tall and twisted tale by one of my most favorite authors.

Highway Cats by Janet Taylor Lisle

Three tiny kittens are abandoned along a highway, and found by several stray cats. The kittens quickly becomes the favorites of the scraggly bunch of lost cats, but their fate is threatened by a construction project that will destroy the small woods that is their home. With some quick thinking and a little bit of magic, can the cats save themselves and the kittens?

The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling gives us another glimpse at the world of Harry Potter in this short book of wizard fairy tales. The book is mentioned in the last few volumes of the Harry Potter series, and Rowling makes it more interesting to Potter fans by adding Albus Dumbledore's personal notes on each story. We can feel like insiders by reading his thoughts on each story and what the tales tell us about wizards through history. This is a fun and short read to satisfy all those fans who miss Harry's adventures.

The Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great by Gerald Morris

If you are a fan of sword fighting heroes, no one is quite as good a Sir Lancelot the Great. These stories are a funny twist on some well known tales, and made me laugh while I read them. The illustrations are just as silly as the stories. I'm hoping this is part of a series.

The Underneath by Kathi Appelt

This book deserves all it's honors (Newbery Honor, National Book Award Nominee) for its beautiful and lyrical writing, but I couldn't help being thrown off by how often the story jumps from character to character, storyline to storyline. It took some time for me to sort out who was who, and when, because the short chapters don't give you much time to get to know anyone, before you are yanked away to another time. I did, however, love the trees. They are practically a main character in their own right, and they were great.

Our Farm: Four Seasons with Five Kids on One Family's Farm by Michael J. Rosen

rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book has some really great pictures, and the text is mostly quotes from the kids on the farm, so it's fun to read too. The farm is in central Ohio, and looks a whole lot like farms you will find around here. My favorite part were the "by the numbers" pages for each season which give funny statistics like how many pounds of manure a cow produces each day.

The Trouble Begins at 8: A Life of Mark Twain in the Wild, Wild West by Sid Fleischman

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Fleischman's biographies always look bigger than they are, but don't be put off by the size. This book is filled with pictures, and printed in large readable type. It's also hilarious; stuffed with Twain quotes as well as some really funny descriptions by Fleischman. Honestly, I sometimes wondered whose voice I was hearing, the author, or Twain himself.

Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka by Jon Scieszka

rating: 5 of 5 stars
We all know that Jon Scieska knows how to write for boys, now we get to see why. He grew up in a house with 5 brothers alternately trying to trick, beat up, puke on, blame and bomb each other. I read it in one hour and didn't stop laughing the whole time. Excellent book for boys who hate books. Scieska knows how to keep it short, simple, side splittingly funny, and often just gross enough for boys. I love this book, and will recommend it often.

The Willoughby children ought to have been orphans, but since they're stuck with unfeeling parents, they devise a plan to make the best of things. And as all old fashioned stories do, it works out in the end, though possibly not as you'd expect.
